Compact Shaped Houses

One-Watt-Houses™ are high performance houses which dramatically decrease the energy demand and increase the comfort. They are inspired by German Passive Houses and adjusted for local conditions. One-Watt-Houses can be heated with about one Watt per square foot during the coldest day of the year.

Customers of CTI can decide to pursue Passive House Certification, LEED, HERS rating, Energy Star, or any label they feel offers benefits. What matters more than any label is the final and measured resource efficiency of the building.

One-Watt-Houses require very little heat on a 0°F day.

Prioritizing Energy Efficiency
The best and least expensive way to live “green” starts with using less energy. One-Watt-Houses are designed specifically to reduce total overall energy demand by 60 to 80% compared to typical Midwestern homes. This approach is not just the most energy efficient but the most economical considering the life cycle of buildings.

Method
The principles of our design are simple:

1. Fully-enclosed, super-insulated thermal envelope (R40-R60).
2. Passive solar energy and the net solar gain provided by windows (Uw<0.16 and SHGC>0.4).
3. Include a highly efficient heat-recovery ventilation system (η > 85%).
4. Minimize air infiltration.
